Domestic violence is based on a need to exert power and control over another person and it affects not only those abused, but witnesses, family members, co-workers, friends, and the community at large. More than one-half million crimes of domestic violence are often unreported. Children who witness domestic violence are victims themselves and they are likely to grow up thinking that violence is normal and perhaps become abusers themselves.
